We often hear the quote, “comparison is the thief of joy.” This has really resonated with me recently as I embark on a new creative adventure of starting a small local business. There are moments where I’m full of excitement and hope. Then the next I’m a nervous wreck and riddled with self-doubt.
If I can be honest, I know that the market is already saturated with people selling personalized gifts and custom apparel. But part of me really just loves crafting, designing and creating. I’m sure this is part of the reason every other small bizz owner is doing what they’re doing. Combining their love of craft to try and earn a supplementary income or even full-time income doing this gig.
But that little voice inside my head chimes in every now and then to say, “Jenn, you’re not anything special. What are you going to offer that other people aren’t already doing?”
And you know what? That’s a pretty fair statement for my mind to want to make. At first, it makes me feel a bit defeated (even before getting started). But, as I take time to reflect on this question and climb out of my own self-doubt, I’m left with the feeling of challenge. Being able to challenge myself to think outside the box, to create a niche that’s worth something to others, but most importantly, to me.
Starting a business (no matter what size) takes a lot of heart, effort and tears. I know it can be discouraging to see others succeed or think that you won’t be good enough. But then, what’s the purpose? How are you suppose to find joy in what you’re doing?
It’s that dreaded comparison game that we all loathe but still partake in more often than we’re willing to admit. So I’m going to encourage not only myself, but others out there that want to start up something new – to be able to really jump in with two feet.
Use your creativity to drive your business. Use your love for what you do to fuel the purpose behind your mission.
We can all be harmonious and be creators together in an uplifting and supportive environment. Let’s leave the competition for sports or when you’re hosting a game night with friends. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to DO YOU. It’s okay to be scared but don’t let that hinder your dream of doing something that brings you joy.
You define your own worth and nobody else. Remember that.
Here’s to starting something new and rolling with the punches!
